Spectral characterization of weeds affecting Saccharum spp. crops, methods of data collection and processing: A review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Context: Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the main crops in many countries, where weed management is essential. The characterization of the spectral reflectance properties of vegetation is the basis for various methods used to discriminate between weeds and Saccharum spp., employed in ground vehicles or unmanned aerial vehicles.
Objectives: To provide an update on elements related to the spectral characterization of weeds that affect the cultivation of Saccharum spp., as well as methods for obtaining and processing spectral data.
Methods: A systematic narrative review of the scientific literature was conducted using a qualitative approach to assess trends and consensus, as well as knowledge gaps and future lines of research.
Results: One of the drawbacks in identifying plant species based on their spectral properties is the variability in reflectance characteristics observed due to multiple factors. Therefore, recent studies take into account the bundle of average characteristics of various samples rather than the traditional concept of spectral signature as a single characteristic. The need for data normality analysis is discussed, the usefulness of spectral correspondence measures is demonstrated, and some useful approaches to principal component analysis and analysis of variance are illustrated
Conclusions: The results may form the basis for future research characterizing weeds and cultivars of Saccharum spp. spectrally.
